Ex Libris 2007

December 31st, 2007 | Comments Off | Posted in Books

I passed my 50-book mark! I read more books last year, but the thing is, I was worried that I won’t be able to read as many books as I want to because of school and other activities, such as my student org.

Of course, the books I read varied, but I still read manga this year. The thing is that I decided to concentrate on certain titles instead, as I have read most of my manga and sold some of them (because I lost interest on some of the titles I bought before). I guess it helped a lot that my friends gave me books on my birthday and I “discovered” authors whose works caught my attention. Anyways, my list under the cut! More »

Ignorance is Universal1

Joann received a feedback from her article at Filipino Journal. A part of the comment (LLB daw siya, so I assume na laywer siya?) says that:

Following the rules and laws of our society need not be taught, it should be inherent in every individual. [Emphasis mine] People break the law because it is their own choice or they are ignorant of the law or by a mere accident. Your (sic) correct in saying that though it is discussed in (GMRC) in Philippine schools there is no emphasis on the law and it’s (sic) consequences. But even the most seasoned of lawyers does not know all the laws and it’s (sic) consequences. For all you know, knowing to (sic) much about law may lead to it’s (sic) controvertion. I believe that it is enough for the citizen to know his basic rights and not dwell to (sic) much on the law.

Okay, please enlighten me if I am wrong, but when did RULES and LAWS become inherent in every individual? Tell me, WHEN? Because as far as I know, whether you’re using frameworks in Psychology, Sociology and even Anthropology, I don’t think there’s such thing as rules and laws being inherent. When you were born, tell me, do you know that you cannot speed way over the limit? When you were inside your mom’s womb, do you know that stealing is bad? No.

His statements made me think. Yes, aside from the wrong use of “its” and “it’s”, the mispelled “Philippines”, among other things, something doesn’t sound right. I am not sure how Joann will respond to this, but for me, every citizen has the right to know what laws govern the society they live in. Otherwise, how are we going to exercise whatever rights we are entitled to? If other people are already oppressing us, how are we supposed to know if there are laws that will protect us from such maltreatment?

Sinabi na rin niya na if you know too much, you will just abuse the “power” and “privilege” that you have, therefore, it is only okay for Juan dela Cruz to know enough. But what is “enough”? Hindi na naman balance yung power. If the majority of the people in the society only know “enough” and then there’s a small group of people who “know too much,” nasaan naka-sentro ang power? What kind of government is he planning to set up, then?

Joann and I are talking about it right now, and really, I feel so strongly about it, it’s not even my article!

1 Complete line is “How can it be a matter of class difference when ignorance is universal?” from the book “Eats, Shoots and Leaves“.

Skate and Dinner

December 20th, 2007 | Comments Off | Posted in Personal, Photolog

So. Yesterday was quite a busy day. It’s a struggle for me to type and edit the pictures because of my painful right arm. Na-i-i-sprain din ba ang shoulders? Because my upper arm is damn painful, it’s annoying the hell out of me.

Later in the morning Lem visited me at home and I made a very quick breakfast. We then caught up with some stories and such. It’s fun talking with her kasi she can understand what the hell I am trying to say. Or reklamador lang talaga ako and she can put up with that, haha. Plus Lem’s comments are funny. More »

Happy, but in pain

I went out with my friends today to skate and to eat dinner at a Japanese restaurant. Right now I’m having trouble moving my right arm because I was holding too tight when my friend helped me skate for the first time. Not gonna do it again. But it was fun going out with them. We’re having a party on Saturday too, so it’s going to be great.

Is it just me?

…or that mahirap lang talagang bumili ng regalong unisex? It’s easy for me to get gifts for girls, but for one of the Christmas parties that I have to attend, it must be a unisex gift because I wouldn’t know who will be my recipient. I was looking around earlier after my work shift and shit lang, everytime I see one item na I think eh unisex (i.e. mugs, tea sets), I always feel na either the designs are too girly, or that if a guy receives my gift, his mom, and not him, will be happy.

Damn this society and its gender constructs. :\

AMF 2008 website initial design

December 13th, 2007 | Comments Off | Posted in Asides, Site Updates, University of Manitoba

Yehey! I finally finished the initial design! Haven’t set up a subdir here on my domain for the files, and I also haven’t heard anything from the peeps regarding registering for the domain name. Mukhang aabonohan ko muna, yung url sa poster din naman yung url na gagamitin eventually eh.

Tweaking

I finally made some changes with my blog. Gusto ko sanang magpalit ng color scheme or tuluyan nang mag-edit ng bagong template but then I realized that I have to start doing the AMF ‘08 website tonight para di na ako mag-cram. Oo na, sige na, nagbabagong-buhay na ako. :P Anyway, this sideblog’s one of the latest stuff I added on my blog. Wala lang.
