Last Marathon For 2004

Ying Xiong (2002)
Cheree said it’s boring. And maybe because I had two servings of martial arts flick that is why I found this film boring as well. I was amazed that Tony Leung Chiu Wai was there; I didn’t recognized him at first (he’s the male lead in My Lucky Star). Anyway, Hero’s about a nameless warrior and — well, you know the stuff, empires, assassinations, swordfights. I wasn’t impressed. I know I shouldn’t compare this to CTHD, or to House of Flying Daggers (BTW, the latter and Hero have the same director), but what can I do? Hindi ako nasiyahan compared with the other two. Rating: 2.5 out of 5

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)
Bihira akong manood ng action flick, pero nagustuhan ko ito. One review from IMDB sounded upset dahil messed-up daw ang characters involved in this film, without knowing that the film itself was based from a comic book, and not really based on the books or stories where they were really featured. I haven’t read the graphic novel but I think the movie was just fine. The story is about the teaming-up (?) of extraordinary gentlemen (with a woman scientist/vampire) to prevent an upcoming war headed by a masked man named The Fantom. The group’s composed of Allan Quatermain (a legendary adventurer in Britain), Captain Nemo, Mina Harker, Rodney Skinner (the Invisible Man), Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dorian Gray and… Tom Sawyer. But don’t worry, he’s pretty hot (portrayed by Shane West).

Laughs

Although the plot was kind of predictable, I can say it’s a good film, with nice effects and witty lines. I actually fell in love with the submarine Nautilus. I cannot point out the plot holes because my sister was talking and laughing aloud while she was using the laptop as I was watching the film. But I am not expecting a sequel. Most of the time sequels suck. Rating: 4 out of 5

Life or Something Like It (2002)
Life or Something Like It’s plot is pretty common (for me, at least). Angelina Jolie plays a somewhat self-absorbed TV personality whose ‘perfect’ life was disturbed when a street prophet predicted that she will die within a week. This is a supposed to be romantic-comedy flick, but much focused was given to Angelina’s transition stage from being ’selfish’ to a more caring and sensitive person, instead of her love-hate affair with Pete, played by Ed Burns. I love the songs in this film; and if White Chicks has A Thousand Miles, well Life or Something Like It has I Can Get No (Satisfaction). Ugh, Rolling Stones version, please. At first the opening scene was confusing, but it’s an ok-ok film for me. Rating: 3 out of 5

Pulp Fiction (1994)
I know that some people find this Quentin Tarantino film an amazing one, so I decided to watch this. It’s about a twisted story between two hitmen (Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta), their boss’ sexy wife (Uma Thurman), and a laos boxer (Bruce Willis). The way I see this film, it’s all about drugs, sex, hitmen, dead people and conspiracy all mixed up and played by different personalities with their own stories. I finished the film pushing the ff button once in a while, and I kind of got bored with it. It has some moments though, especially the twist dance between John Travolta and Uma Thurman. I like the characters portrayed by Travolta and Jackson; somewhat paradoxical. Still, I really don’t get this film. I guess I have to watch it over again. Rating: 2.5 out of 5

hahaha. nakakatawa ang LXG. :P naweirduhan ako dahil parang Justice League na oldschool book characters ang mga super heroes. but then again, it was pretty amazing na rin. kaya lang obvious na rin ang effects :p
