When I hear people say that they like the “Lomo Effect” more often than not they are referring to bright and saturated photographs. No matter how some will say that they can get this by digital manipulation, nothing beats color-tripping by making chemicals react like they’re high and wild. I mean, you’re targeting the effect and see it right away with digital, and that just kills the excitement, really.

Welcome to cross-processing!

Cross-processing (also known as ‘x-pro’) is the procedure of deliberately processing one type of film in a chemical solution intended for another type of film. If you do this, the results are going to be unexpected and unpredictable. If you like to experiment with film and colors, you may want to try this one out.

This is not a new practice I believe as filmmakers and photographers have been doing this for a while now.

I love cross-processing if not for the price. When I was in Manila the cost is almost the same as processing a colored negative film whereas in Canada this as treated as a “special order”, so I usually end up paying more. Because of that I reserve my cross-processing desire when I need to do some special projects, or if I’m traveling elsewhere.

Here are some of the cross-processed shots I’ve made since going back to film (I’ve been a film child since I was born in the 80s!) that I loved. I’m going on holidays this summer so I’m hoping to stock again on slides (I don’t have a lot) and immerse myself to this process’ element of surprise.

I re-discovered the world of analog photography through a friend and from thereon, film photography has been a part of my continuous journey in interpreting my surroundings through the viewfinder. I have moved from the Philippines to Canada with my family in 2003, and photography has helped me in remembering and capturing my life as it changes right in front of me.
I have just loaded my Diana (non-LSI) with some 120 slide films last July 4 for the Winnipeg Jazz Festival, and I was absolutely thrilled with the results! I like using it more with slides than with black and white (which produced soft-colored photos — which is not my cup of tea as I like my monochromes dark and contrast-y).

I can’t remember getting these results with my Holga CFN 120 so I don’t know if I should quickly pass the judgment and give my Diana my extra love. But for less than $50 (I got it for free because Kelvin got it for me as a gift), it definitely deserves the praise.

I was going over my folder filled with my photos from my 2-month stay in the Philippines last September 2008 when I saw these. I stopped blogging after I got back from the said trip so I wasn’t able to share the photos with people. Anyway, since I’m pretty much back thru this photoblog, I might as well put some of them here.

So here you go, 10 photos taken during my several visits to Quiapo, Manila.

To anyone who is interested with the tech stuff, I used my LC-A and Solid Gold 200 Colored Negative Film and Konica Centuria 200 Slide Film. Processed by the love of my life Digiprint. Yes, I used film. Photoshop can only do so much with fake grain.

My almost a dozen used rolls of films were finally processed. I just realized that I shouldn’t be shooting with expired colored negatives unless I want to achieve a certain effect. Will be waiting for my new film stash ordered online though.

Used a lot of cameras, but stuck with film for the past few months. I want to be profound most of the time.

Actually I cannot really consider these as “forgotten” — more of like I wasn’t able to take advantage of Digiprint’s 5 rolls Scan to CD service the first time I went to one of their branches. I have three rolls of film (2 Fuji Astia if I’m not mistaken and one Kodak Color bulk film, but I cannot remember the ISO) that I brought there but I mistakenly forgot to tell them to scan the negs to CD instead of giving me prints. Anyway. I left these prints in the Philippines because of baggage limit, and my aunt just sent these to my cousins when they went home recently. I went on scanning galore.

That’s too much for introduction, anyway. Some photos. These was taken August last year, and I only got to scan them this year. Hah.
